- Mardi Gras Pancake Supper from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at St. Peter's Episcopal Church (950 East Washington Street Lebanon, IN). Admission: Caring Center donation or free will donation. Mardi Gras literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French. The name comes from the tradition of slaughtering and feasting upon a fattened calf on the last day of Carnival. The day is also known as Shrove Tuesday (from "to shrive," or hear confessions), and Pancake Tuesday. The custom of making pancakes comes from the need to use up fat, eggs and dairy before the fasting and abstinence of Lent begins. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is February 25th. Ashes are an ancient symbol of repentance, cleansing, human mortality, and mourning. The words "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" are spoken as the priest traces a small cross of ashes on the forehead of each worshipper. The service of Holy Communion with ashes begins at 7 om on Wednesday, February 25th. Everyone welcome!
