July 2003 NEWSLETTER
Volume 8, No. 7

BOOK SALE RESULTS
Thanks to all who participated in the June book sale. The Friends made $214.37 from the two-day sale, and many used books, magazines, videos, pieces of software and equipment found new homes. We are now collecting good used materials for the Friends’ festival booth and are storing them off-site since construction is about to begin. The Festival of the Turning Leaves book sale will be September 27-28 on Main Street.

NEW TAX LAW 2003
Learn about its impact on you! On July 15, 7-8:00 p.m. on the upper floor of the library, a panel of certified public accountants will explain how the JOBS AND GROWTH TAX RELIEF RECONCILIATION ACT OF 2003 will affect almost everyone. President Bush signed JGTRRA into law on May 28. Unless the law is subsequently changed, its provisions, which took effect July 1, will continue through 2010. The discussion and slide presentation will be followed by questions, answers and refreshments. The speakers, all from C.S. Oats Accountancy in Lebanon, include Sam Oats of Lebanon, Amy Hay from the Veedersburg Office and Tom Fuhrmann from the Crawfordsville office.

Their June presentation on charitable giving was well organized and very understandable. Their July program on the new tax law will answer many questions, help you identify timelines, help you plan for the changes, some of which are retroactive to January 1, and help you maximize your tax savings. The program is not intended to make anyone an expert on the new law but will present information that will allow participants to leave with an overview of how the act will impact them. For example, capital gain rates have changed with various expiration dates. Dividends have a maximum tax bracket with various applications. Individual income tax rates have lowered in all brackets; the amount of money in a given bracket has changed for some taxpayers. The so-called marriage penalty tax has changed some; the standard deductions for married couples will now be 200% of the standard deduction for single taxpayers. The child tax credit has changed, and although some taxpayers will get refund checks this year on this credit, others won't. Businesses will be able to write off up to $100,000 of new equipment. Bonus depreciation for new property purchased after May 5 is increased. Come and join us on July 15 to listen, watch, learn, and eat!

YOUTH PROGRAMS
The summer youth programs officially started on June 3rd and have been going strong, thanks to all of the children who have signed up. There are approximately 165 children participating in one or more of 18 programs to celebrate the anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Stories, crafts, snacks, and special guests have contributed to the overall appreciation of the voyage taken 200 years ago.

Book Beat is going strong this year. There are 23 participants in this year’s Book Beat program. The Battle of the Stars will be held from 2:00-5:00 pm on July 23rd for the 4th-6th grade reading levels, and from 2:00-5:00 pm on July 24th for the 6th-8th grade reading levels. Participants, feel free to call the library with pizza requests and any questions you may have.

JULY 25TH CELEBRATION!!!
The Youth Department will be having a big celebration to end the summer programs and celebrate the success of the Reading Expedition: Read and Explore. The event will be from 9:00-11:30 am on July 25th at the Lions Shelter. Adults will want to bring lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the celebration will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Thorntown United Methodist Church, across the street from the library.

This event is for children who have participated in a summer program. Programs include:
Read to Me

BUILDING PROJECT ENGRAVED BRICKS
On the east side of the expanded library will be picnic tables on a brick paver patio. The Friends of the Thorntown Library is making available the opportunity for individuals, families, groups, and businesses to preserve their names by having an engraved paver installed in the patio floor. A sample (though not in the correct color) is available for viewing at the library. Three lines of up to twelve letters and spaces may be used. The cost is $23.00; this includes the $21.00 brick and engraving and some money toward installation. Forms for ordering your paver are available at the library desk, and payment (cash or check payable to Friends of Thorntown PL) is required at the time of order. No orders can be accepted after December 19, 2003.

BUILDING PROJECT ARTISTIC TILES
The Friends organization is also making available for children’s art white ceramic tiles that will be added to the wall of the children’s bathroom. The cost is $3.00 per tile. This is an idea we “borrowed” from Witham Hospital’s nursery, and hospital CEO Ray Ingham has offered us the use of Witham’s ovens to bake the finished designs if we cannot keep up in our home ovens. Tiles, markers, and forms are available on both floors of the library. The artwork must be completed at the library (tile may not be taken home). The $3.00 may be paid in cash or check payable to the Friends of TPL.

RECYCLE INKJET CARTRIDGES AND HELP PROVIDE LIBRARY PROGRAMS
At its June meeting, the Friends voted to use as a fund-raiser the “Empties4Cash.com” program. For every INKJET cartridge returned in good shape, the Friends will receive $2.00. Now is the time to reduce pollution, recycle, and help your Friends and library at the same time. Please note:

Typically, the Friends of Thorntown Public Library hold two book sales per year and use the proceeds to help fund both adult and children’s programs. The Friends are now working to help develop a walled garden area for children and your assistance is appreciated.

ADULT SUMMER READING
From July 14 to September 19, we invite all young adults through senior citizens to “Pave the Way to a Reading Summer. The prizes are, we think, great fun. The reader who reads the most in each of 5 age categories will have paver installed in the library patio.

The paver will say:

TOP READER
Summer 2003
Your Name

The age categories and the names we have assigned them are:

Register at the circulation desk and pick up small paper pavers, whose colors represent your category. Read, read, read (books, books on cd, books on cassette, books from our library or anywhere else). As you finish a book, write the title, author, and your name on the paver…we plan to display these on our bulletin board with footing at the bottom, foundation next, etc. If you prefer, your name may be on the back instead of the front, but we need to know who read the book in order to calculate the winners.

You may count any book you are now reading…as long as you finish it on or after July 14. So, without the mess, without a trowel, start piling up the pavers and pave your way to a great summer of reading fun!

COUNTY FAIR
We have Open Show entry tags for anyone who wishes to complete them in advance. We also have some Open Show books left. Entries to the show will be accepted at the Community Building (Lebanon) from 7-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, and from 8:00-11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 24. See you at the fair!

PILLOW TALK - August 18
Trisha Seef of Lafayette demonstrated on July 1 how to make a pillow from digital photos. We are scheduling another class for Monday, August 15, 8-9:30 p.m. The cost will be $3.00 and includes printable fabric and fabric for the front and back of your pillow. You will need to bring fabric scissors, ruler, pins, and a digital photo (in jpeg format on disk). If you don’t have a digital photo, bring a print and we shall scan it for you. For best reproduction, photos should have no more than two to four persons or pets in them. Two sewing machines will be available, and you should be able to go home with a pillow ready to stuff.
