BOOK SALE
Friends of Thorntown Public Library will hold their annual summer books sale on August 6-7 during the library’s open hours. Donations of clean, used books may be brought to the library on August 5, but, please, not before! See article “The Big Move” below.

13 until the 13th: FEARSOME FRIDAY THE 13TH
NOW is the time to check out up to 13 videotapes and DVD’s and not have to return them until Friday the 13th—of August 2004. Operating under the principle “the more you have at home, the fewer we have to move”, the library staff has extended the deadline for returning books and videotapes to Friday, August 13. Come in NOW and borrow all you can carry.

THE BIG MOVE...
is almost here. On Wednesday afternoon, July 28, staff will begin moving books and other materials into the new addition. That will continue on Thursday and Friday. The library will be CLOSED on Monday through Wednesday, August 2-4 while moving crews move furniture. There will be no programs on August 2-4. However, the summer book sale will be set up Thursday afternoon and on Friday and Saturday you are invited to buy books and other materials (for the price of a donation to the Friends for library programs) and see the public areas of the library. There will be no “back room” tours until the November 6-13 celebration week.

WANTED: DUSTERS, DUST-PERSONS
As you well know, everything about the library seems dusty. We need willing hands to dust every book, nook and cranny. Every cassette tape and CD and DVD box is dusty. We shall provide glass cleaner, waxes and rags—what we need are willing hands. Even an hour is a help. We shall provide lemonade and coffee—let us know if you can provide an hour.

MEETING ROOM SPACE AVAILABLE
As of August 5, the library will have two meeting rooms available. To keep noise levels minimal, the kitchen that serves the two rooms is across the hall. These rooms may be booked for family reunions, wedding receptions, and birthday parties as well as for meetings. There will be no charge as long as the rooms are left clean, trash is placed in containers provided, and no custodial service is required. If custodians have to be hired to clean up, a charge of $25.00 per room will be levied. We are now booking through 2005 and will soon be booking six years in advance (through 2009), so planning ahead is appropriate. We did identify 13 meeting areas in the expanded library, some of which are the east parking lot, parent center (seats 4-6), Guinn Genealogy Center (upper level of Carnegie), kitchen (seats 8), as well as the two rooms that seat 50 each. Let us know your needs and we’ll plan to find space for your group. To reserve meeting room space, call and ask for Linda White or Cathie Jackson.

Youth Department
“Reading Under Construction” is the youth department’s summer theme, but unknowingly the children are having a great time and additionally developing their prereading and reading skills that will make a firm foundation for them throughout their lives. These skills are being constructed from birth on. The more parents promote reading at home and encourage the use of the library, the constuction phase will only increase the strength of the foundation.

Library construction has not dampened the spirits of our young patrons who look forward to being involved each summer in one or more programs offered by the youth department.. One hundred and thirty-nine youth signed up for programs this summer: Battle of the Books, 14; Clueless Mystery Club, 23; Getting Ready for Kindergarten, 8; Kids World, 16; Secret Garden Book Club, 8; Storytime, 27; and Reading Under Construction, 43.

Due to the closing of the library August 2, 3, and 4th, the Secret Garden Book Club will meet on August 9 and Battle of the Books I will meet from 10:30-12:30 on August 10, followed by Battle of the Books II from 12:00-2:30. Pizza will be served at 12:00 for both groups.

“Reading Under Construction” Bingo Cards Due and Prizes Awarded On July 29th at 10:00 a.m. All youth who signed up for the reading only program, “Reading Under Construction” may come to the Thorntown United Methodist Church to receive their summer reading prizes. Your completed Bingo sheets will allow you to be admitted to receive a book, poster, and other prizes/surprises. Food will be served. Due to the youth department moving into the newly expanded area for youth on this date, our celebration will be held from 10:00-11:00 only. See you there!

ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION
Adults who enjoy talking with others about a good book are invited to read “Big Stone Gap” by Adriana Trigiani and join us on Monday, August 16, 2:30 p.m. for light refreshments and good discussion. This is the story of 36-year-old pharmacist Ave Maria Mulligan, self-proclaimed spinster of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Her weekly visits to a bookmobile nourished her hunger to explore a wider world. As the local pharmacist, Ave has been keeping the townsfolk’s secrets for years but discovers a skeleton in her own family’s closet that blows the lid off her uneventful life. The discussion will be led by Cathie Jackson, our technical services assistant.

“So Many Books, So Little Time”-
book review by Head Librarian Fern Miner
I have seen that slogan on t-shirts, and heard as catch-phrases by my reading colleagues. Lo and behold, Sara Nelson has written a book by that title. What self-respecting librarian could pass that up? Subtitled A Year of Passionate Reading, editor, reviewer, reporter, mother, daughter, wife, and compulsive reader Sara Nelson set out to chronicle a year’s worth of reading. She had a system—fifty-two weeks, fifty-two books…and it all fell apart the first week. She discovered she couldn’t plan her reading…. “In reading, as in life, even if you know what you’re doing, you really kind of don’t.” Nelson writes of a personal journey filled with wit, charm, insight, infectious enthusiasm.

Does this phrase sound familiar to you? ‘Books get to me personally. When things go right, I read. When things go wrong, I read more.’ This is Nelson’s attitude toward wanting to devour all kinds of books she missed, books she encountered, books recommended by a friend, and books she felt she should have read. You may find some lively choices for yourself among these 242 pages. Several of our customers keep small notebooks of what they have read, some with ratings and personal notes. ‘Find another by author’ and ‘locate next in series’ and sometimes, NO by a particular title.

While recuperating after surgery last summer, I stocked up on books and did some serious (day after day) reading. I kept a list of books I had read, but did not rate them. In reviewing these index cards, I realized I could never have recalled the titles of many of them. I agree there are ‘so many books, so little time’ but also have to continually remind myself to not read every word on the page. It helps if there are vast amounts of dialogue. Unless I am doing a book report, or preparing for a book discussion, I really do not need to relish every word that an author writes. Sorry, all my author acquaintances, those words you worked so hard to select and place exactly right, this reader can’t spend two weeks with a book that you spent a year on. Finding the best word and phrase is not easy…most authors write and write and rewrite. That’s before the editor gets it! (It strikes me odd that some writers get their books published, and it appears no editor ever saw it).

I love the book’s cover—a woman totally surrounded by piles and stacks of books. My message to you---READ ON.

SIM INDIANA...
is now available at your library. Sim Indiana is a revolutionary group of products designed to provide basic office software services. It is available to all Hoosiers at no charge. We have installed the software on our public computers in the Adult Department. To use this software you will need to set up an account online at http://mylocal.IN.gov (we will assist you in doing so when you come in). Once you have your user name and password set up, you have access to all the Sim Desk software which includes Simword (word processing application), SimCalc (spreadsheet application), SimExplorer (file manager application), SimMail (full-featured e-mail application), SimPIM (personal information manager), and SimGroups (enables you to create groups of SimIndiana users whom you can share appointments, contacts, notes, and files). All of your files will be stored at a central location so that you can access them from any computer with an Internet connection and Sim Indiana software installed. You may download the software for home use at http://mylocal.IN.gov. After we have established our computer lab in the Carnegie (November 1, 2004), we will be offering classes on how to use the different applications provided by Sim Indiana.

COMPUTERS AND LIBRARIES
According to a recent New York Times article, 28 percent of all libraries in 1996 had computers for public access to the Internet, and today 95 percent of libraries offer Internet access. The Times also reports that Internet-connected computers bring more people into libraries and that one year after computers are put in libraries that do not have them, visits rise on average 30 percent. In Indiana, all 92 counties have at least one library offering public access terminals.
